Malaysia’s No 1 professional golfer Gavin Green will be the man to beat as he attempts to win his first Toyota Tour event at the Supra Cup that starts this Tuesday at the Mines Resort Golf Club.
Ranked 70th on the DP World Tour, Gavin’s last win in Malaysia was the Tun Ahmad Sarji Trophy at Saujana in February 2022 when he defeated Danny Chia by one stroke. Danny will get an opportunity to turn the tables against him when they both tee off in the same group, with Sabahan Ben Leong as the third player.
The inclusion of Gavin in the Supra Cup makes this the strongest ever field in the Toyota Tour so far. The second featured flight comprises Ervin Chang, Shahriffuddin Ariffin and up-coming Fakhrul Akmal while Paul San, Nicholas Fung and Galven Green – Gavin’s younger brother – are in the third featured flight.
The Supra Cup is the sixth leg of the Toyota Tour presented by UMW Toyota Motor and delivered by MST Golf Group Berhad. The men’s purse for the Supra Cup is RM180,000 with the winner receiving RM31,500. In the ladies’ category, the winner will receive RM10,000 from a pool of RM30,000.
Gavin has had a good run on the DP World Tour – formerly the European Tour – since a tie for 56th in the Scandinavian Masters in June. He then finished tied 12th in the BMW International Open, tied for 8th in the British Masters, tied 49th in Norway and tied for 68th in the Scottish Open last week.
Since turning professional in 2018, Gavin has amassed a whopping RM14,500,000 in total earnings and many of his supporters feel it’s only a matter of time before he wins on the European stage.
The ladies’ championship is led by Aretha Pan followed by a host of talented players like Geraldine Wong, Genevieve Ling, Jocelyn Chee, Michelle Koh and amateur Winning Ng who won the ladies championship in the Corolla Cup in Ipoh two weeks ago.
The Par 71 Mines layout designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., was the scene of the 1999 World Cup that was won by Americans Tiger Woods and Mark O’Meara.
