The Sentosa Golf Club’s Tanjong Course will host the upcoming HSBC Women’s World Championship for a record 11th year, taking place from February 29 to March 3, 2024. ParGolf recently gained insights into the club’s preparations in hosting this esteemed LPGA tournament. Additionally, 2024 marks the club’s 50th anniversary, following a successful 2023 where it earned numerous accolades at the World Golf Awards including becoming the world’s first carbon-neutral golf club. Andy Johnston, the General Manager and Head of Agronomy at Sentosa Golf Club, shares his perspective on the challenges faced by his agronomy team while ensuring best practices are adhered to for a successful HSBC Women’s World Championship.

With the latest edition of the HSBC Women’s World Championship set to be held on The Tanjong for the 11th time, how has the Club helped to promote women’s golf development and participation in Singapore and Southeast Asia?

Sentosa Golf Club (SGC) has played a pivotal role in promoting women’s golf development and participation in Singapore and Southeast Asia through its hosting of the HSBC Women’s World Championship. By hosting the event for the 11th time (with one edition cancelled due to COVID), the Club has established itself as a leader in women’s golf development.

The tournament serves as a platform for aspiring female golfers to witness world-class competition, inspiring them to pursue the sport. Additionally, we engage in various initiatives, such as junior golf programs, clinics, and outreach efforts to encourage greater participation among women in the region.

As we approach the event, can you share any specific challenges that your agronomy team might face when preparing the course for an international tournament and how do they go about addressing them?

The agronomy team often faces specific challenges when preparing our courses for international tournaments like the HSBC Women’s World Championship. Challenges include adjusting to varying weather conditions, ensuring the course meets professional standards, and managing increased foot traffic during the event.

The team is able to address these challenges through meticulous planning, customised maintenance practices, and continuous monitoring. The use of precision irrigation, strategic fertilisation, and aerification helps maintain optimal playing conditions despite external pressures.

Our agronomy practices align with broader environmental sustainability goals. The Club implements several eco-friendly measures, such as integrated pest management, minimal pesticide use, and waste reduction to reduce the overall effects on the environment.

The Club has also put in place initiatives to enhance biodiversity, conserve water resources, and promote soil health. These sustainable practices not only minimize the environmental impact but also contribute to the overall ecological balance of the golf course.
