Talor Gooch is anticipating the return to the Lion City to defend his title at LIV Golf Singapore at Sentosa Golf Club from May 3-5, 2024.
Reflecting on his memorable victory last year, Gooch expressed his fondness for both the golf course and the vibrant atmosphere of Singapore. “I had a great year there last year. I love the golf course,” he said. “I ate a bunch of good food and had a blast when I was there last year. So, eagerly ready to get back there.”
Gooch’s admiration for Sentosa’s Serapong is unmistakeable. He describes it as a ‘fantastic golf course’ that demands precision and rewards skill.
“The golf course is fantastic, and it’s going to reward the guy playing the best that week,” he said.
Recalling his dramatic victory in last year’s tournament, where Gooch played a pressure-filled playoff against Sergio Garcia. Yet, he managed to maintain composure and execute crucial shots to secure the win.
He said, “18 is not a fun tee ball to hit in a playoff. I made a birdie on 18 in regulation to get into the playoff and hit a good tee ball in regulation.
“And when I got to the tee in the playoff, I was just hoping and praying that I hit another good tee ball there. And fortunately, I did and hit a great second shot. And Sergio had a tough up and down, and I had a pretty makeable eagle putt. Fortunately, I was able to get the job done.”
Despite Singapore’s notorious heat and humidity, Gooch is mentally prepared. “Every week, I’m training and preparing for tough weeks physically,” he said. Drawing from his experience growing up in warm climates, he feels equipped to handle the conditions effectively.
Though Gooch acknowledges the elevated expectations during tournament week, he emphasised the need to stay focused in the present moment. “You just have to figure out how to get rid of those expectations and just get locked in the moment,” said Gooch, who was traded to the Smash GC team this year.
Reflecting on the trade, Gooch highlights the camaraderie and mutual support among teammates as the driving force behind his decision to join the team.
While Gooch expressed disappointment at missing out on competing in prestigious events like the Masters, he remains optimistic about the future. He hopes for a resolution that would allow all top players to participate in major tournaments.
On the topic of world ranking points, Gooch remains hopeful for a resolution that will benefit players.
“I know that LIV is doing what they can to work with the powers to find a remedy for the unfortunate situation. And, listen, change is hard for people. We knew that this would buck the system a little bit, and there would be some people combating it. I think everyone was kind of aware that this wasn’t just going to be a seamless, easy process.”
As he gears up for the tournament, Gooch is ready for the upcoming challenge. “It’s going to be a fun week,” he declares. “I obviously would love to go and hoist the trophy at the end of the week again.”
