Kenshi and Brittany sweep boy’s and girl’s crowns at SportExcel International Junior Championships

Japan’s Kenshi Yada emerged as the overall champion in the Boys category when the SportExcel International Junior Championships concluded at the Glenmarie Golf and Country Resort.

The Japanese ace carded rounds of 70, 69 and 66 for an overall three-day total of 207 to walk away as the outright winner, leaving his opponents trailing by a wide margin.

Malaysia’s Liew Connor Axel Kai gave the local fans reason to cheer by coming in second with a total score of 216 (72,73,71) while another Japanese player Daichi Hayashi finished third on count back despite carding a total score of 216 (72,72,72).

The overall Girls title saw an almost clean sweep by players from the Philippines with Brittany Pauline Tamayo (photo) hogging the limelight with a total score of 222 after rounds of 76, 73 and 73.

Her fellow countrywoman Lisa Angeles Sarines finished second on yet another countback after finishing with a total score of 222 (71,77,74) while Malaysia’s Nur Batrisyia Balqis finished third with a total score of 224 (75,75,74).

Philippines also walked away with the Team title with an overall score of 655 over the three days while Thailand and Malaysia finished second and third respectively with scores of 658 and 661.

A total of 112 Elite Junior golfers from 11 countries, including host nation Malaysia, competed in the SportExcel International Junior Golf Championships that was held from Jan 14 to 16.

The Championships, held at the Glenmarie Golf and Country Resort from Jan 14 to 15, featured several age group competitions for the boys and girls, starting from the age of 9 to 21.

The 112 total number of players was made up of 64 Boys and 48 Girls comprising 54 from Malaysia and 58 from 11 foreign countries.

The Boys and Girls participated in the 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15-18 and 19-21 age group categories.

SportExcel executive director C. Sivanandan welcomed the overwhelming response to the Championships, noting the strong level of participation from young golfers. He said SportExcel was pleased to host the event, which he believes will play an important role in identifying and nurturing emerging golfing talent among Malaysian children.

Sivanandan also highlighted the support of Tourism Malaysia, which partnered the Championships and presented souvenirs to players during the official welcoming ceremony. As part of efforts to promote Malaysia as a tourism destination, Tourism Malaysia further organised a city tour for 65 overseas players and their parents.
