Zach Johnson (-19) was crowned champion of the historic inaugural Portugal Invitational on Sunday. The American secured his fourth win of the season in his debut campaign on PGA TOUR Champions, claiming victory in the Algarve and bringing to a close a memorable week that marked Portugal’s arrival on the global senior golf stage. Johnson finished at 19-under-par, two shots clear of Stewart Cink (-17).
Played in front of outstanding crowds throughout the weekend, with thousands of spectators creating a vibrant atmosphere around The Els Club Vilamoura and the 18th green for Sunday’s finish, the first edition of the Portugal Invitational delivered a fitting finale to a landmark week for Portuguese golf.
“It almost feels too good to be true. To win the first edition here in Portugal and claim my fourth victory of the year is incredible. It honestly feels like I’m dreaming. I’m really proud of the way I played this week, and there’s no doubt that the front nine today gave me the platform to go on and win. It’s an amazing feeling,” Zach Johnson said moments after securing the title in Portugal.
Johnson built his victory with a spectacular start to the final round. Beginning the day one shot behind the overnight leaders, Stewart Cink, Padraig Harrington and Rory Sabbatini, the 2007 Masters champion immediately put pressure on the leading group with three consecutive birdies, then added two more on the front nine to reach the turn in five-under par.
One of the defining moments of Johnson’s round came at the seventh, which had been the toughest hole on the course throughout the week. The American produced two of his best shots of the day before converting a testing birdie putt, extending his momentum at a crucial stage of the final round.
That flying start established a three-shot advantage that proved decisive. A further birdie at the 11th tightened his grip on the tournament as the breeze picked up around Vilamoura, adding another layer of difficulty to the closing holes. Johnson eventually signed for a flawless, bogey-free 65, capped by a closing birdie at the 18th, to become the first champion in Portugal Invitational history.
Cink and Harrington refused to let Johnson pull away without a fight. Cink delivered a particularly strong finish, carding three birdies over the final seven holes to secure outright second place, while Harrington also stayed in contention deep into the back nine. Their efforts, however, were not enough to deny Johnson, who remained in control to complete a deserved victory.
The result also highlights the quality of the tournament field, with the three leading players in the Charles Schwab Cup standings all finishing on the podium in Vilamoura. Johnson’s victory levels him with Stewart Cink on four wins this season, although Cink retains the lead in the Charles Schwab Cup standings. Remarkably, Johnson has moved into contention for the season-long title despite having played just 11 tournaments in his rookie campaign on the senior circuit.
Host Ernie Els, playing on the course that bears his name, closed with an impressive four-under-par 68 to finish the tournament at eight-under, inside the top 20. Fellow World Golf Hall of Fame member Bernhard Langer ended the week at six-under-par.
