Bryson DeChambeau’s bulked-up new physique and increased swing speed have not only resulted in greater distance … he’s had to go two shirt sizes up as well!
“I was a medium at the end of last year actually, and now I’m in an extra large. It’s a little big fit on me depending on the style of shirt, but I love it. It feels comfortable. So I have had to change some stuff,” said the colourful American star during last week’s Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Cub, which marked the PGA Tour’s return after a three-month hiatus.
“Puma has been really nice to give me some clothing, so I don’t really have to worry too much about that,” added the five-time PGA Tour winner.
DeChambeau finished joint second at Colonial on 14-under-par and topped the driving distance statistics with an average of 340.4 yards.
“I was flying it probably 295 to 300 [before] and now I’m flying it over, like with no wind or anything, probably around 325, 330 very easily,” said the 26-year-old, who was just one shot shy of the playoff between winner Daniel Berger ad Colin Morikawa.
The limited number of fans at the grandstand attempted to guess the new DeChambeau’s weight, but he laughed that they were way off. “They said like something around the 350 area, and they’re 100 pounds off! I’m only 235 to 240 right now. I think when I play these next three weeks, I’ll get down to 230, but my ultimate goal is to get as strong as I can … and I don’t know what that weight is.
“I’m just going to keep proportionally making everything stronger and applying some force and speed to the golf swing to see what it can handle. I’ve had to change my lofts like crazy recently. I’m down to 5 degrees on the driver. I’m looking to get a 3-wood that’s around 10 degrees. I’m producing so much spin I have to change the clubs itself. It’s crazy!”
DeChambeau is in the field for this week’s RBC Heritage at Harbour Town in South Carolina, grouped with Webb Simpson and Davis Love III for the first two rounds.
