CIMB Group Holdings Berhad announced its sponsorship of professional golfer Ervin Chang, in line with the Group’s purpose of being at the forefront of supporting sporting talent. Ervin’s sponsorship will see him joining a roster of distinguished past and present champions that have been associated with CIMB, including the likes of Datuk Azizulhasni Awang and Datuk Nicol David.
The announcement comes at an opportune time as Ervin readies himself for The Malaysian Open having secured the coveted Asian Tour playing rights for the 2024 season.
The signing ceremony was witnessed by YB Hannah Yeoh, Minister of Youth and Sports. During her speech, YB Hannah Yeoh said, “I applaud CIMB’s efforts in supporting the sporting youth of Malaysia. Their efforts have a tremendous impact on the growth and trajectory of our athletes and I commend their continued focus in nurturing these talents. I’m excited to see the prospect of this partnership for the vitality of youth and sports in the country.”
Effendy Shahul Hamid, Chief Executive Officer, Group Consumer and Digital Banking, CIMB Group said, “Ervin is a proven winner, and we are extremely pleased to have been given the opportunity to partner with him as he takes his career to the next level. We are excited to be working with another top-class athlete as he continues to take Malaysia forward in the sport of golf.”
“In many ways this is very much a homecoming for Ervin, as he is one of the beneficiaries of CIMB Group’s numerous junior sports development programmes. We are happy to have been able to play a role in Ervin’s development thus far, and we look forward to partnering with him as he takes his career to the next level,” added Effendy.
Ervin Chang added, “It is an honour to be supported by a trusted and established ASEAN banking institution such as CIMB. This partnership speaks of their commitment in helping to sustain an encouraging environment that nurtures young talent, for the future of sports in Malaysia. I am grateful to be given the support to take my passion further and pursue excellence in professional golf. I am excited about the upcoming season and hope to do the country proud and becoming a Malaysian flag bearer in international golf.”
Ervin Chang, who hails from Seri Kembangan in Selangor, is one of the pioneers of the CIMB Junior Golf Development Programme in 2010. This partnership celebrates the progress he has made since then, while widening CIMB’s brand reach that champions Malaysian sports. It also aligns with the Group’s overall brand presence and reputation as it continues to entrench itself as a strong supporter and responsible corporate citizen in building communities and developing high potential talents in Malaysia, and beyond.
Through the support and guidance offered through the CIMB Junior Golf Development Programme, Ervin turned professional in 2022 at age 23 and went on to win double gold medals in golf (individual and team categories) at the 2022 Vietnam SEA Games in Hanoi, being the first Malaysian to accomplish this. Ervin was crowned the Order of Merit during the Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) 2023 Toyota Tour Season (as at 31 December 2023).
