John Daly has withdrawn from next week’s Open Championship at Royal Portrush due to a medical condition, The R&A announced yesterday.

On Sunday, Daly posted on social media that he had been bitten by a brown recluse spider last week which led to surgery to treat an abdominal infection. He was in England for a vacation at the time.

On July 6, The R&A issued a statement that it had turned down the 1995 Open champion’s request to use a buggy at Royal Portrush. Daly, 53, suffers from osteoarthritis in his right knee which makes it difficult for him to walk for long periods. He was permitted to use a buggy during the PGA Championship at Bethpage Black in May.

Daly’s place in the Open was given to the first reserve, fellow American Kevin Streelman.
