Malaysia’s Gavin Green concludes his 2020 European Tour campaign in this week’s DP World Tour Championship, which starts tomorrow (Thursday, December 10) at the famed Earth Course of Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai.
Gavin is making his first appearance in the European Tour season finale, which features a 65-man field battling it out for a prize fund of US$8 million – of which a whopping US$3 million goes to the winner – and the bonus pool on the season-long Race to Dubai (RTD) ranking.
The Malaysian No 1 tees off at 9.40am (1.40pm Malaysian time) in the first round, paired with England’s Robert Rock.
With 2,000 RTD points going to the winner and the player finishing last receiving 30, mathematically any of the leading 60 players on the current ranking – including Gavin who is in 42nd position with 654.6 points – could become RTD champion with victory in the DP World Tour Championship and claim the US$500,000 bonus pool top prize. The next four players on the final RTD ranking also earn lucrative bonus paydays.
2018 Masters champion Patrick Reed heads into the event at the top of the ranking with 2,427.7 points as he bids to become the first American winner of the RTD. He is one of four players who could guarantee they become champion with a win this week. Compatriot Collin Morikawa, the reigning PGA Championship winner, is currently in third place and could also achieve the feat in his tournament debut.
English duo Tommy Fleetwood and Lee Westwood, in second and fourth place respectively on the RTD, could also win the title. Both players have topped the RTD before, with Fleetwood earning the honour in 2017 and Westwood winning the title in 2000 and again in 2009.
