Malaysian No 1 Gavin Green will resume his Race To Dubai campaign in the third event of the European Tour’s UK Swing, the English Championship which takes place at Hanbury Manor Marriott Hotel & Country Club in Hertfordshire next week.
Gavin has been granted a special exemption by the Malaysian government to travel internationally and will leave for the UK tomorrow (Saturday, August 1). He underwent a Covid-19 test earlier this week and the results were negative.
“It’s been tough the past few months not being able to compete, so I’m really looking forward to getting back into action,” said Gavin, who is in his third season on the European Tour.
“I”ve been working out a lot and put on some muscle, plus I’ve practiced and played regularly since golf courses reopened in early May. The game is in good shape and in fact I’ve gained distance,” added the 2017 Asian Tour Order of Merit winner.
The European Tour resumed in early June after a four-month hiatus since the Qatar Masters, where Gavin finished T12. The long-hitting 26-year-old is currently in 21st place on the tour’s Race To Dubai season rankings.
Following the English Championship, Gavin plans to play back-to-back events at Celtic Manor Resort in Newport, Wales, the Celtic Classic and Wales Open, followed by the final event of the UK Swing, the ISPS Handa UK Championship at The Belfry in Sutton Coldfield, England.
“I’ll most likely return to Malaysia after that, skipping the events in Spain and Portugal, and then head back to the UK for the Scottish Open and BMW PGA Championship in October,” shared Gavin.
All tournaments in the European Tour’s reshaped 2020 season are governed by a comprehensive health strategy developed by the tour’s medical officer, Dr Andrew Murray, in consultation with health care specialists Cignpost. They are currently being played with no spectators until such time as it is deemed safe to open the gates.
“I’m confident that the European Tour protocols will provide as safe an environment as possible for players, caddies and officials. It will be odd playing without galleries but it’s better to be safe than sorry in these times,” noted Gavin.
