Golf resumes in Malaysia … in part at least

Golf restarts partially in Malaysia this week, following a protracted shutdown of the industry since Phase 1 of the Movement Control Order to combat Covid-19 was implemented on March 18.

Golf clubs, driving ranges and retail outlets are allowed to reopen from today (May 4) in certain parts of the country under the less stringent restrictions of the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) announced by the federal government on Labour Day. However, golf and other sports are still on hold in states such as Sabah, Sarawak, Negeri Sembilan, Penang, Kedah, Pahang and Kelantan, where the local governments have elected to defer the implementation of the CMCO either in part or in full. Selangor also modified the CMCO implementation but has permitted golf to resume from Monday, while golf in Perak restarts on May 7.

With high traffic expected at golf clubs upon reopening, the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) has urged golfers to download the MyTrace app developed by the Ministry of Science, Technology & Innovation, which uses Bluetooth for contact tracing. The app records the distance and period of close contact and not geographic location.

The MGA has issued recommended social distancing and sanitisation protocols for golf clubs to follow upon resumption of operations, while the Golf Club Managers Association of Malaysia has expanded on that to include non-golfing operations and office practices.

Golf clubs in the permitted states will be recommencing operations on various days this week, depending on their level of operational and maintenance readiness.
