The Indian Golf Union has decided to cancel the 2020 Hero Indian Open due to the threat posed by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
The tournament had earlier been postponed from March to later in the year, but the decision to now cancel the event was made following consultation with co-sanctioning partners, the Asian Tour and European Tour.
“It was a very difficult decision, but the right one under the present circumstances of the ongoing pandemic,” said Lt Gen D Anbu (Retd), acting president of the Indian Golf Union. “With no likelihood of any respite in the foreseeable future, safeguarding the health and well-being of all players, officials and spectators is of paramount importance.”
“I would like to thank Dr. Pawan Munjal, Chairman, MD and CEO, Hero MotoCorp Ltd. for his continued patronage, and the European Tour and Asian Tour for their support.”
The storied event was established by the Indian Golf Union in 1964 and is one of the oldest running international sports tournaments in the country. Hero MotoCorp has been the title sponsor since 2004.
This means that India will not have a national Open this year following the cancellation of the 2020 Hero Women’s Indian Open earlier this week. The Ladies European Tour event will return next October.
