The R&A announced recently that the IRS Prima Malaysian Open 2024 has been selected as part of The Open Qualifying Series Asia.
Three leading finishers at The Mines Resort & Golf Club, who are not already exempted before the closing date for entries of The Open, will qualify to play in this year’s Open Championship to be held at Royal Troon from 14-21 July, 2024.
MGA President, Admiral Tan Sri Dato Setia Mohd Anwar Mohd Nor (R) said, “We are grateful to The R&A for their vision and support of the IRS Prima Malaysian Open 2024. This milestone has certainly lifted the event’s prestige and status. Without a doubt, golf fans are in for an exciting championship when the best of Asia and Malaysia battle it out at The Mines.”
“As first-time title sponsors, we are extremely excited that the IRS Prima Malaysian Open 2024 has been awarded The Open Qualifying Series status,” said Group CEO of IRS Prima Holding Sdn Bhd, Dato’ Yusuf bin Abdul Rahman. “We strongly believe that this development will be a great boost for the tournament, the players, golf audiences and the nation.”
The historical announcement was also welcomed by Cho Minn Thant, CEO & Commissioner of The Asian Tour.
“The IRS Prima Malaysian Open is the opening event of our 2024 season and its Open Qualifying Series status certainly increases the motivation for our members who are enjoying a much-deserved off-season as well as those who competed in Final Stage of Qualifying School,” he said. “Our members are always appreciative of the chance this provides them and are quick to incorporate Open Qualifying Series events into their schedule.”
Previous Malaysians who played in The Open include Iain Steel in 1996, Danny Chia in 2010, while the last golfer that featured in The Open was Gavin Green in 2018.
The 62nd edition of the Malaysian Open welcomes an impressive field of 144 players from the Asian Tour and Malaysia who will compete from 15-18 February at The Mines Resort & Golf Club.
