Justin Thomas will start this week’s PGA Championship at TPC Harding Park not only as the World No 1 but as a pundits’ favourite, following his impressive come-from-behind win at the World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational on Sunday.
In what will be the first Major of the revamped 2020 season, the 27-year-old will be gunning for his second win in one of golf’s ‘Big Four’, having claimed the PGA Championship in 2017.
“It means a lot, especially with how I felt like I did it. In the past, I struggled with coming from behind. I got wrapped up in how far I was behind and how many people. I feel like I learned a lot from that,” said Thomas, who returned to the top spot in the Official World Golf Ranking for the first time since 2018.
Just three weeks earlier, Thomas had squandered a three-stroke lead with three holes to go at the Workday Charity Open and lost to Collin Morikawa in a playoff.
Thomas now has 13 PGA Tour victories (including the 2015 and 2016 CIMB Classic at TPC Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia) and is the third youngest player to reach that mark, behind only Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.
