Defending champion Brooks Koepka will take the largest 54-hole lead in PGA Championship history into the final round at Bethpage Black. The World No 3 carded a third round 70 to lie on 12-under-par, seven shots ahead of the chasing pack.
“I’m just trying to play good golf. If I can get off to a good start tomorrow, these first six holes are very scorable. I feel like if you can get one- or two-under after six, you’re in a good spot. That’s all I need to do tomorrow, and then from there, from 7 to 12, just try to hang on and make as many pars as you can,” said Koepka who leads or co-leads for the 12th time in the last 34 rounds at a Major – no player has led more than six in that time.
Koepka has won three of the last seven Majors he’s played in, having missed last year’s Masters due to wrist surgery.
Young Thai talent Jazz Janewattananond meanwhile continued his fine form in just his second Major start with a third round 67, tied for second on five-under-par with Harold Varner III, Luke List and Dustin Johnson.
The 23-year-old Jazz noted that his performance has far exceeded his expectations. “The course plays so tough because the rough is so long, the ball doesn’t go anywhere. I was having a nightmare during the practice round. How am I going to play this golf course? I thought I’m not going to break 80! This exceeded my expectation already,” said the three-time Asian Tour winner, who missed the cut in the 2018 Open Championship which was his only previous Major appearance.
