Kupcho powers to victory at Augusta National

American Jennifer Kupcho lived up to her reputation as the world’s top-ranked lady amateur with a dramatic victory in the inaugural Augusta National Women’s Amateur yesterday.

Trailing Mexico’s Maria Fassi by two strokes after 12 holes in the final round at Augusta National Golf Club, Kupcho played her closing six holes in five-under-par – including an eagle on the par-five 13th – to triumph by four shots.

The 21-year-old Kupcho, who is a senior at Wake Forest University, fought off a migraine and blurry vision to record a tournament low 67 for a 54-hole total of 10-under-par 206.

“It’s always a great feeling to win . But I think to win at Augusta National, just to get to walk the fairways and walk up 18 with as many fans as there were, it’s an experience like none other,” said Kupcho, the reigning NCAA individual champion.

“It’s an amazing feeling, to have my brother here, to have my parents here, everyone out there supporting me. It was quite a day.”

Reigning Asian Games golf medalist Yuka Saso of the Philippines and Japan’s Yuka Yasuda tied for third place on two-under 214.
