The highly anticipated LIV Golf Singapore presented by Resorts World Sentosa brings some of the biggest names in world golf to the iconic Asian destination, and two superstars of the game are relishing the prospect of a return to Sentosa Golf Club to showcase the ground-breaking professional league to golf fans in the region.

Six-time major winner and HyFlyers GC captain Phil Mickelson and English Ryder Cup hero and Majesticks GC co-captain Ian Poulter are no strangers to the country or the course, having both featured regularly in the Singapore Open, including a tournament victory for Poulter in 2009.

Momentum builds for Mickelson following his captivating display at this year’s Masters, the first major of the season, where the three-time champion at Augusta thrilled sports fans around the world with a seven-under-par 65 on Sunday. His sensational final round brought him within striking distance of eventual champion Jon Rahm and gave him a share of second place alongside fellow LIV Golf star and Smash GC captain Brooks Koepka. The duo finished just ahead of former Masters champion and 4Aces GC standout Patrick Reed, who completed the tournament T4.

Mickelson is confident that the performance is a true reflection of his form, and the sign of things to come. The World Golf Hall of Famer said, “I’m hopeful that this catapults me into playing the rest of the year the way I believe I’m playing. I really worked hard in the offseason to get ready. I’ve been shooting some really low scores at home, and I let it happen rather than trying to force it, and I had a really good day and made some noise.”

Mickelson has been part of many Ryder Cup showdowns with Poulter over the years, and he highlighted the positive impact that LIV’s innovative format can bring to the game, as the 48 world-class players battle it out in simultaneous team and individual championships over the course of the season.

As captain of a team which also features James Piot, Brendan Steele and Cameron Tringale, Mickelson said, “Having a team environment when I was in high school and college, it elevated my game – having players to play with, compete with. It brought a great energy and excitement. And that’s what this is doing for me at LIV.”

Poulter’s Majesticks GC are coming off their best showing as a team this season, a sixth-place finish at LIV Golf Orlando. Although the European quartet including Lee Westwood, Henrik Stenson and Sam Horsfield currently sits in 11th place in the standings, the team is taking a holistic approach to changing their fortunes in Singapore and beyond.

Poulter said, “We have to raise our game to make sure that we are playing at the highest level, and I love playing against the best players in the world and this format lends itself to that.

“We are collectively working harder from a fitness perspective, from a practice perspective, and we are trying to get as much time together as we can so the team dynamic itself continues to build and will hopefully grow that winning combination for us. It’s really interesting to see how the teams have grown this year, with all the team outfits, the golf bags and the merchandise.”

Poulter is excited to bring LIV Golf’s unique brand of competition to the Garden City, a destination with happy memories after his 2009 Singapore Open win. He said, “It’s going to be amazing to go back to a venue which I’ve won in the past. I’ve got fantastic memories from playing that event and competing at the very best level, so I’m super excited.”
