The Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) held a press conference today to inform the golfing fraternity that the Malaysian Open will go on as scheduled this March 5-8 at Kota Permai Golf & Country Club.
Speculation was rife regarding the status of the event following the cancellation of a number of high-professional events in the region in recent weeks.
MGA president Tan Sri Mohd Anwar Mohd Nor noted that they have decided, in consultation with the Asian Tour, that the event will proceed in strict adherence to several measures as guided by the Ministry of Health to ensure the health and safety of players, officials, volunteers and patrons.
“We acknowledge the current Covid-19 situation, which has forced the cancellation of a few events in the region and the country,” said Tan Sri Mohd Anwar. “However, we are confident that by strictly adhering to the Ministry of Health’s guidelines in putting up measures for such situation, the event will be successfully organized according to schedule.
“On that note, we invite all Malaysians together with your children to experience a four-day professional golfing event at the Kota Permai Golf & Country Club.”
These measures include, without limitation, the following:-
- Medical facilities at Kota Permai Golf & Country Club;
- Medical officials available during the tournament days;
- Face masks to all players & audience and temperature screening as and when required;
- Adequate hand sanitizers and sufficient facilities for hand wash;
- Hospitality suites are adequately ventilated;
- Commonly used areas are frequently cleaned.

Meanwhile, preparations for the US$1 million championship are progressing according to schedule with on-ground facilities being readied and a few top Asian Tour players confirmed for the event.
“We are currently at 80% in terms of our preparation for the event and will be fully ready very soon,” said Arep Kulal, CEO of Winning Matters Sdn Bhd, the event promoter: “We are confident that with all the health and safety measures in place, this event will be successful.”
