Malaysians On Tour: Gavin Green inches up to 40th place on European Tour’s Race To Dubai

Malaysian men’s No 1 Gavin Green has moved up one rung into 40th place on the European Tour’s Race To Dubai rankings, following a T47 finish at the Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa yesterday.

Gavin carded rounds of 68, 73, 74 and 76 for a three-over-par total at Leopard Creek Country Club in Malelane. The ZAR19.5 million (approx. US$1.27 million) event was won by local talent Christiaan Bezuidenhout with a 14-under-par total.

Gavin now heads to Dubai for this week’s US$1.2 million Golf in Dubai Championship presented by DP World at Jumeirah Golf Estates’ Fire Course, opting to play in that event instead of the concurrent. South African Open.

The abbreviated 2020 European Tour season then concludes with the DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah’s Earth Course on December 10-13. This will be Gavin’s first appearance in the US$8 million season-ender, featuring the top 60 players on the Race To Dubai. In two previous seasons on the European Tour, Gavin’s final Race To Dubai rankings were 85th in 2018 and 69th in 2019.

Malaysian ladies No 1 Kelly Tan meanwhile resumes LPGA action in this week’s US$1.75 million Volunteers of America Classic at Old American Golf Club in Dallas, Texas. This will be followed by her 16th Major appearance in the US$5.5 million US Women’s Open at Champions Golf Club in Houston, Texas on December 10-13. The 2020 LPGA season then concludes with the US$3 million CME Group Tour Championship at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Florida on December 17-20.

Over in Japan, veteran campaigner Danny Chia will be preparing for next week’s Japan Golf Tour final qualifying tournament at The Royal Golf Club in Ibaraki (December 8-11) as he seeks to regain his card on the lucrative Japanese circuit.
