Malaysia’s Alyaa Abdulghany progressed to the second round of the matchplay stage of the US Women’s Amateur Championship, beating Kirsty Hodgkins of Australia 4&2 in the round of 64.

The other Malaysian in the field, Natasha Andrea Oon, however failed to progress after falling to American Nicole Whiston 5&4 at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland.

Alyaa, who is Malaysia’s top-ranked women’s amateur at No 34 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), will face American Marissa Kirkwood in the next round.

Both Alyaa and Natasha are based in the United States. Alyaa is in her senior (final) year at the University of Southern California while Natasha, ranked 54 on the WAGR, is in her junior (third) year at San Jose State University.
