Malaysia’s Ashley Lau secures first professional victory at Australia’s Vic Open

Malaysia’s Ashley Lau emerged victorious at the 2024 Vic Open, securing a notable win in Australia’s summer golf circuit. Lau’s outstanding performance prevented former world No.1 Jiyai Shin from making history as the first woman to defend the title successfully. Riding high on her excellent form in the previous Webex Players Series events, Lau delivered an impressive 6-under-par 66 in the women’s Open on Sunday, including seven birdies, ultimately edging out Shin by a single shot.

Lau’s critical birdie on the par-5 18th secured her a clubhouse lead at 12-under. As Shin faced the challenging task of needing a birdie on the final hole to force a playoff, Lau appeared poised to claim the trophy. Despite a valiant effort from Shin with a remarkable 3-wood shot on her third attempt, a missed putt on the 18th green confirmed Lau’s victory.

Awaiting the results on the putting green, Lau experienced a nerve-wracking wait, only learning of her win through the crowd’s reaction when Shin’s putt narrowly missed the mark. Reflecting on the tense moments, Lau expressed her overwhelming emotions, stating, “I said ‘you know I can’t do this, I’m super nervous, I’ve never felt this nervous before’… When the news came in that I’d won, I started crying. I came down here just to prepare for the upcoming Epson Tour. This is a big confidence boost.”

Having spent her high school years at Hills International School in Queensland, Lau felt a special connection to Australia. With major winner Jason Day as an alumnus of the same school, Australia held sentimental value for her. Lau’s triumph at the Vic Open not only boosted her confidence but also marked a significant achievement in her professional career.
