Malaysia’s Jeneath Wong is quickly becoming a household name among the golf fraternity in the country. The 17-year-old recently won the women’s title in the Australian Master of the Amateurs tournament at the Victoria Golf Club.
The 4-day tournament in Melbourne, Australia, has evolved into one of the elite championships in amateur golf, and like the Masters, the champion receives a Green Jacket.
The Melbourne-based Jeneath, who also won the Sandbelt Invitational in December 2021, is the second Malaysian to have worn the coveted jacket after Alyaa Abdulghany donned it in 2020.
Jeneath managed to fend off determined pursuers with three late birdies in the back nine to finish at 4-under-par. She posted rounds of 70-70-74-70 for total 284, seven strokes ahead of Belinda Ji.
When the tournament opened, the Malaysian teenager trailed by two strokes behind Pantita Phobubpa. However, she opened an eight-shot lead on the second day with her second 2-under 70. She did have some bad moments when Belinda birdied three holes on the outward nine to cut her lead down to three. Jeneath managed to calm her nerves to get the job done. The three birdies in the last five holes sealed the deal for her.
When asked, Jeneath, who is bound for Pepperdine University in California, said that playing in this exclusive tournament with top amateurs was an excellent experience for her. She debuted in the event in 2019,
finishing in 17th spot. In 2020, she finished 11th and vastly improved her standing in 2021 to 4th position. It would seem that she was headed toward victory in 2022.
