Maybank Championship field takes shape

The Maybank Championship has announced a diverse line-up who will join World No 9 Henrik Stenson at Saujana Golf & Country Club in the third edition this February 1-4.

The field will include a number of players ranked in the top 50 of the Official World Golf Ranking such as Austria’s Bernd Wiesberger, Thai star Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Japanese duo Yusaku Miyazato and Yuta Ikeda. The championship will also see the return of its two previous champions, 2017 winner Fabrizio Zanotti of Paraguay and 2016 winner Marcus Fraser of Australia.

Former World Number 1 Lee Westwood of England, Italy’s Matteo Manassero and Thai legend Thongchai Jaidee, all former winners of the Malaysian Open, will also feature in the US$3 million joint European Tour and Asian Tour event. Japanese star Ryo Ishikawa has been given a sponsor’s invitation, along with 2018 Ryder Cup captain Thomas Bjorn of Denmark.

Bjorn’s predecessor, Northern Irishman Darren Clarke, will also be in the field as will 2016 Masters champion Danny Willett of England.

Exciting young players such as Julian Suri of the USA, England’s Wade Ormsby, Denmark’s Lucas Bjerregaard, Frenchman Romain Wattel, England’s Paul Dunne and Wang Jeunghun of Korea – all winners of the 2017 European Tour – have also confirmed their participation in the tournament.

France’s top player Alexander Levy returns to Malaysia having represented the victorious European team in the recent EurAsia Cup.

China will be represented by the country’s top player Li Haotong, rising star Bowen Xiao and amateur Lin Yuxin who earned his place by winning the 2017 Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in New Zealand.
