MercedesTrophy National Final crowns 2025 champions, three Malaysians head to world final

Tan Wan Fook clinched the Drive to the Major title, winning an all-expenses-paid trip to The Open 2025 in Scotland

The 2025 MercedesTrophy National Final wrapped up on June 19 at The Els Club Desaru Coast, marking the end of Malaysia’s leg of the global amateur golf series. Now in its 35th year, the MercedesTrophy spans over 60 countries and remains one of the most respected tournaments on the amateur golf calendar.

This year’s competition in Malaysia began with four qualifying rounds—three held at Tropicana Golf & Country Resort in Selangor and one at Forest City Golf Resort in Johor Bahru. From there, 20 finalists advanced to the National Final in Desaru, where the championship course demanded sharp focus, refined technique, and nerves of steel.

After a competitive day on the greens, three standout golfers emerged victorious. Tengku Baderul Zaman Ibni Sultan Mahmud took the title in Category A, Muhamad Khairi bin Zakaria won Category B, and Chong Mun Hoe triumphed in Category C. All three will represent Malaysia at the MercedesTrophy World Final in Germany this September.

Also earning the spotlight was Tan Wan Fook, who clinched the Drive to the Major title. His win comes with an all-expenses-paid trip to The Open 2025 in Scotland, a rare chance to witness one of golf’s most iconic championships up close.

While no one claimed the sleek Mercedes-Benz EQE 350+ Electric Art Line on offer as a hole-in-one prize, the car’s presence underscored the tournament’s blend of sport and luxury, core values of the brand.

Throughout the event, participants were treated to exclusive merchandise, elevated hospitality, and pristine golfing conditions, reinforcing the premium experience associated with the Mercedes-Benz name.

The top three finishers from each category will now move on to the World Final from September 28 to October 2, set at the five-star Der Öschberghof hotel in Germany’s Black Forest region. There, they’ll compete against amateur champions from across the globe with views stretching to Lake Constance and the Swiss Alps.

For Mercedes-Benz Malaysia, the tournament remains more than just sport.

“This exclusive tournament brings together our valued customers who not only share a love for the game but also appreciate the sophistication it represents,” said Nadia Trimmel, Vice President of Marketing & Sales. “We’re proud to deliver memorable Mercedes moments on and off the course.”

With another year of competition complete, the stage is now set for Malaysia’s champions to showcase their skills on the world stage.
