The Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Sabah Golf & Country Club on 14 December 2024. A total of 31 delegates, including 11 committee members and 20 affiliated members, attended the meeting to discuss and deliberate key issues affecting the development and governance of golf in Malaysia.
During the AGM, the new MGA Committee for the 2024-2026 term was elected as follows:
- President: Tan Sri Mohd Anwar Mohd Nor
- Vice Presidents: Teoh Piek Kee, Tan Sri Aseh Che Mat, Dato’ Merina Gan
- Honorary Secretary: Dato’ Zulkifli Ismail
- Honorary Treasurer: Chow Chee Keong
State Representatives:
- Kedah: Azman Awang
- Negeri Sembilan: Wagiran Surep
- Pahang: Dato’ Jaafar Abdullah
- Perak: Mohamad Azlin Mohd Nadzri (nominated by Perak Golf Association)
- Sabah: Valerian Petrus (nominated by Sabah Golf Association)
Key issues discussed at the AGM included:
- State Amateur Open Hosting Procedures: Enhancing guidelines to improve the organization and delivery of state-level competitions.
- World Handicap System (WHS): Emphasizing the importance of compliance with WHS standards and addressing the prohibition of System 36 as mandated by the R&A and USGA.
- Course & Slope Rating: Reviewing the validity and renewal of rating certificates, highlighting their critical role in handicap calculation and overall governance.
- National Junior Development Program (NJDP): Recognising the progress and achievements of junior golfers and reinforcing MGA’s commitment to nurturing young talent.
- National Team Successes: Celebrating the accomplishments of national players in local and international tournaments, showcasing Malaysia’s growing presence on the global stage.
- Referee and Amateur Status Programs: Reviewing activities to enhance knowledge and participation among referees and amateur golfers.
- Financial Overview: Reporting on the financial performance of the association for the year ended 2023, with an assurance of continued prudence in 2025 to ensure sustainability without compromising MGA’s objectives.
In his address, President Tan Sri Mohd Anwar Mohd Nor reaffirmed MGA’s commitment to promoting and developing golf in Malaysia while adhering to international standards and best practices. He emphasized the importance of collaboration among state affiliates, clubs, and other stakeholders to drive the sport forward.
The AGM concluded with a strong resolve to prioritise the association’s core objectives, including grassroots development, enhancing governance, and achieving greater international recognition for Malaysian golf.
