MGA pay tribute to Sea Games golf athletes for their outstanding achievements at The Mines

The Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) recently hosted an award ceremony at the Mines Resort Golf Club to honour golf’s talented athletes for their exceptional performance at the recent Sea Games held from 8-13 May 2023 at the Garden City Golf Club in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

The award ceremony recognised the ground-breaking achievement of Ng Jing Xuen, the first female golf athlete to win a gold medal at the Games. The 15-year-old youngster not only outplayed seasoned golfers but set a new milestone for the sport in Malaysia.

The award ceremony also honoured other key contributors to the success at the Games. Malcolm Ting, who won the men’s individual silver medal, and Foong Zi You, who claimed the women’s individual bronze medal were recognised for their outstanding performance in their first Games appearance.

The valiant efforts of Geraldine Wong was also celebrated, acknowledging her contribution in securing the women’s team bronze medal in the matchplay event.

The Deputy Minister of Youth & Sports, YB Adam Adli in extended his congratulations said, “This outstanding performance is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our athletes and the MGA. I hope that our golf team continues to create waves at major events. Rest assured the Ministry of Youth & Sports will remain a strong pillar of support.”

The MGA also acknowledged the steadfast dedication and determination shown by the other athletes in the team- Anson Yeo, Harris Hezri, and Nateeshvar Ganesh – at the Games in Phnom Penh. Each of these talented athletes competed fiercely in both the individual stroke play and team matchplay events. Although their efforts did not culminate in a podium finish, their performance reflected a level of tenacity and resolve that is truly commendable.

In response to the momentous achievement, the President of MGA, Admiral Tan Sri Mohd Anwar Mohd Nor said, “I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of our team. From parents, club managers, KBS, OCM, sponsors, to team managers, everyone played a crucial role in this historic achievement. I congratulate our players for their exceptional performance. MGA pledges to continue overcoming challenges and striving for excellence as we work towards promoting and developing golf in Malaysia.”

The performances of the Sea Games team have shown promising signs of their potential to make significant strides in future competitions.
