Malaysia’s Mirabel Ting emerged victorious in the Vietnam Ladies Amateur Open, clinching the championship with an impressive display of skill and determination. The 17-year-old Ting carded a 72 in the final round for her third title of the year. Her exceptional performance throughout the event, with scores of 73-65-72, amounted to a remarkable 6-under-par total of 210. Ting’s triumph was sealed by an astounding eight-stroke margin, solidifying her status as the indisputable champion.
After a slightly challenging start, trailing the leader by one stroke following her first-round score of 73, Ting showcased her resilience and remarkable ability by delivering exceptional performances in the final two rounds.
The highlight of Ting’s tournament came during the second round, where she carded an exceptional 7-under 65. The round included an eagle on the second hole and an impressive six birdies, showcasing her precision and finesse on the course.
“If it wasn’t without everyone’s support — dad, mum, grandpa, FSU and friends — I would not have been able to grab this championship today,” said Ting.
She added, “I’d especially like to thank my country (Malaysia), close friends, and my kind of older sister for all the talks. It’s been a rollercoaster, but totally worth it.”
Reflecting on the rollercoaster of emotions that accompanied her path to victory, Ting affirmed that the challenges she faced were entirely worth it.
Ting’s remarkable achievements extend beyond this tournament. As a freshman at Augusta University in 2023, she earned the prestigious honour of being named to the All-American Second-Team by the WGCA. Ting’s exceptional talent has not gone unnoticed, as she is set to join the Seminole Women’s Golf Team under the guidance of Head Coach Amy Bond and her coaching staff starting in September. Her accolades include being named the Southland Conference Freshman of the Year and securing a spot on the Southland Conference Championship Team. Furthermore, Ting led the Jaguars to a commendable fifth-place finish at the NCAA Athens Regional. She also earned a place on the Southland Conference Spring 2023 Commissioners Academic Honour Roll.
Throughout her budding career, Ting has consistently displayed her remarkable skills, maintaining an impressive average of 71.73 strokes across 16 rounds in six tournaments. Notably, she secured her first career win at the 2023 Moon Invitational in Florida, finishing in second place (+2) at the Southland Conference Championship, thereby propelling Augusta to victory in the conference championship. Her commendable performances resulted in seven top-15 finishes, including her notable victory at the Moon Invitational.
Mirabel Ting also represented Team International in the prestigious Arnold Palmer Cup held in Pennsylvania in June. Moreover, she emerged triumphant in the TSM Challenge held in Kuala Lumpur just last month. Her remarkable accomplishments have propelled her to the 58th position in the world amateur golf rankings for women, making her the second highest-ranked Malaysian golfer behind Jeneath, who holds the 51st position.
