PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan has been inundated with an “incredible outpouring” of support since his announcement that he will be stepping aside to focus on recuperating from a medical situation. Tyler Dennis, Executive Vice President & President of the PGA Tour, shared this message during a conversation with Damon Hack of Golf Channel on Wednesday. Dennis emphasised that the Tour remains fully committed to its players and is determined to maintain the positive momentum of the season, which has already witnessed numerous thrilling moments.
Dennis, alongside Chief Operating Officer Ron Price, is leading the day-to-day operations of the PGA Tour while Monahan takes his leave. “Last night’s news was a shock,” stated Dennis, “but our priorities remain unwavering. We are fully dedicated to our business objectives and moving forward at full steam.”
Monahan informed the PGA Tour Policy Board about his situation on Tuesday, and there have been no further updates regarding his health as of Wednesday. Dennis reiterated the family’s request for privacy during this time.
In the meantime, the PGA Tour continues to forge ahead with its important endeavours. “Our topmost focus will always be our players,” affirmed Dennis. “They are at the forefront of our minds as we strategise for the business. We will continue to lead the Tour’s day-to-day operations and have many exciting ventures on the horizon.”
The Tour has already witnessed thrilling moments and achievements. As the golfing community gathered for the 123rd U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club, the buzz surrounding Nick Taylor’s 72-foot eagle putt to win the RBC Canadian Open on Sunday still lingered. Taylor’s victory marked the first time a Canadian golfer had won the tournament in 69 years, as he defeated Tommy Fleetwood in a playoff.
Dennis highlighted this memorable moment, which reverberated through the cheers of loyal Canadian fans, as symbolic of an ongoing season filled with excitement. Jon Rahm currently leads all players with four victories, while Scottie Scheffler, boasting a Tour-leading 12 top-10 finishes, tops the FedExCup standings. Both players will tee off as co-favorites at LACC.
“There is a tremendous amount of exhilarating momentum,” expressed Dennis. “Our priorities remain unchanged, and we are diligently working towards finalising agreements. In the coming weeks and months, there will be significant news on this front. We also have other exciting developments, most notably our 2024 schedule.”
He continued, “We are stronger than ever, and our focus remains firmly on the future. I believe that Jay would want us to continue this incredible season and, particularly this week, to be fully engaged in the fantastic city of Los Angeles and its magnificent venue, anticipating four days of enthralling golf.”
