The 116th edition of the Malaysian Amateur Open tees off on the 10th to 13th of this month at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Golf & Country Club in Shah Alam with one of the storied event’s strongest ever fields.
A full field of 136 golfers from 17 countries will vie for the coveted trophy in the Category C World Amateur Golf Ranking event, including defending Sadom Kaewkanjana of Thailand. Sadom overcame compatriot Witchayanon Chothirunrungrueng in a playoff in last year’s edition at Nexus Golf Resort Karambunai in Sabah, with the latter also confirmed for this year’s event.
“This event has been the pinnacle of all aspiring golfers not only in Malaysia but worldwide as well, as is reflected in the participation of our foreign guests from far and wide. Our local golfers will have the opportunity to gauge their golfing skills against the foreign players and I feel that this is an opportunity not be missed,” said tournament director Dr Ronnie Yeo, who is the club’s director of operations.
Malaysia’s challenge will be led by national team stalwarts Adam Arif Madzri, Rhaasrikanesh Kanavathi, Afif Fathi and Chan Tuck Soon. The last local winner of the event was 2017 Asian Tour Order of Merit winner Gavin Kyle Green, who triumphed at Glenmarie Golf & Country Club in 2012. Gavin’s younger brother Galven, who plays collegiate golf for the University of New Mexico, is also in the field.
The presenting sponsor of the tournament is Bermaz Motor, the distributor of Mazda automobiles in Malaysia.
