The Royal Selangor Golf Club (RSGC) has taken steps to ensure that its 200-odd part-time caddies are able to get by during the ongoing Movement Control Order (MCO).
All golf clubs in Malaysia have had to shut down during the MCO, imposed from March 18 to April 14 to curtail the Covid-19 pandemic. Part-time caddies have thus been left without any income as they rely solely on daily fees and tips.
A statement released by RSGC noted that “in this unexpected turn of events arising from the Covid-19 pandemic, caddies who work at the RSGC are probably the hardest hit financially.”
The statement continued:
“RSGC has 199 registered caddies who qualify for some financial assistance from the club during this health crisis. None of the caddies are employed by the club and they are paid on a piecemeal basis based upon the number of bags carried. Most of them come from the local community close to the club in Kampung Pandan, Kuala Lumpur.
“To help them out, the club made a first payment to them on 21st March. Recognising the caddies’ plight, another payment contributed by members will be made within the extended Movement Control Order period by bank transfer to maintain social distancing.
“We hope that the financial assistance can be of some help to the caddies during this difficult time.”
With a history dating back to 1893, RSGC is one of the oldest and most prestigious golf clubs in Asia. Located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur city, the members’ club features two championship 18-hole layouts as well as a nine-hole executive course.
