Rory McIlroy has his sights set on surpassing Colin Montgomerie’s record of eight Race to Dubai titles after capping a remarkable 2025 season with a seventh triumph.

The World Number Two enjoyed a stellar year, completing the career Grand Slam with a memorable Masters victory, claiming the Amgen Irish Open, and playing a pivotal role in Europe’s historic away Ryder Cup win at Bethpage Black.

McIlroy staged late drama at the DP World Tour Championship, holing a 16-foot eagle at the 18th to force a play-off, though he ultimately fell to Matt Fitzpatrick at the first extra hole. His runner-up finish, however, secured a fourth consecutive Harry Vardon Trophy, moving him past Seve Ballesteros’ six titles and just one behind Montgomerie’s record of eight.

“It seems within touching distance now,” said McIlroy. “I was the first European to win the Grand Slam and I’d love to be the most successful European in terms of winning Order of Merits and season-long races. Hopefully I have a few more good years to catch Montgomerie and surpass him.”

Surpassing Ballesteros, McIlroy said, was particularly special. “It’s amazing. I spoke with his wife, Carmen, before my round, and she told me how proud he would have been. He means so much to this Tour and to the European Ryder Cup Team. To equal him last year was cool, but to surpass him this year… it’s very cool.”

Reflecting on the influence of Ballesteros on his family, McIlroy added: “He was always my dad’s favourite player. When I hear Seve, it brings me back through my journey in the game. It’s quite emotional.”
