RSGC Ladies’ Amateur Open returns for 48th edition

The Royal Selangor Golf Club (RSGC) is once again set to take the spotlight in women’s amateur golf with the return of the RSGC Ladies’ Amateur Open Championship, which will be held from 5 – 7 August 2025. Now in its 48th edition, the Championship is the longest-running private club-based women’s amateur golf tournament in Malaysia, and continues to reinforce its legacy as both a proving ground and a springboard for emerging talent.

The tournament will be played on RSGC’s East Course, a composite layout comprising the front nine of the Old Course and the back nine of the New Course. Tournament Director Chew Seng Poh confirmed that preparations are already underway to raise the green speed to 11, promising a more challenging yet rewarding test of skill.

The event is open to female amateur golfers aged 12 and above, with a USGA Handicap Index of 13.4 and below. Chew noted that the lower handicap entry requirement—down from 14.3 last year—reflects the club’s intent to raise the standard of competition and attract a stronger field.

The 2025 field reflects the championship’s growing international appeal, welcoming participants from Thailand, Singapore, Japan, and India, a testament to its rising stature in the Asia-Pacific amateur golf circuit. Notably, this year also marks the debut of teams from Guam, Bangladesh, and the Indonesia Golf Association, further expanding the tournament’s regional footprint.

“The RSGC Ladies Amateur Open has evolved into a truly regional event,” said Chew. “We’re not just hosting a tournament — we’re building a stage for the next generation of champions from across Asia-Pacific.”

Indeed, the RSGC Ladies’ Amateur Open has long been a catalyst for Malaysian golf, having helped shape the careers of numerous household names. Among its distinguished alumni is Mirabel Ting, the 2023 Champion, who now ranks World No. 2 on the World Amateur Golf Ranking and recently earned a spot on the Asia-Pacific team for the 2025 Patsy Hankins Trophy. Past winners also include Winnie Ng Yu Xuan, a two-time champion who turned professional immediately after her victory in 2024, and Lim Siew Ai, Malaysia’s first LPGA Tour player and a multiple-time winner during the 1990s. Players such as Loy Hee Ying, Natasha Andrea Oon, and Ashley Lau Jen Wen also cut their competitive teeth at RSGC before rising to prominence internationally.

New to this year’s championship is a significant addition aimed at elevating its prestige and relevance. For the first time, the top-performing ASEAN player will earn a direct slot into the Maybank Championship ASEAN Qualifying Round, a move that further establishes the tournament as a critical stepping stone for those with professional ambitions.

The tournament will once again highlight some of the most sought-after trophies in Malaysian amateur golf, including the Tuanku Bahiyah Trophy for the Gross Champion and the Toh Puan Norashikin Trophy for the Nett Champion. In the team categories, players will compete for the Datin Azian Trophy (Team Gross) and the Clarissa Lee Trophy (Team Nett), each carrying a rich tradition of honouring excellence and sportsmanship.

Participation fees for the Championship have been set at RM980 for Malaysian players and RM1,510 for foreign entrants, with an additional RM180 for those entering the team event.

Registration for the tournament is now open and will close on Saturday, 26 July 2025. Further information and entry forms are available on the official championship website at http://lao.thersgc.com.
