Wilayah Persekutuan emerged as the big winner in the just concluded SUKMA Golf competition by sweeping two golds out of four at stake at the Kelab Golf Negara Subang.
The Wilayah Persekutuan ladies team represented by Jeneath Wong, Ng Jing Xuen and Victoria Tan Xin Yi claimed the ladies’ team gold medal with a combined total score of 446. Jeneath Wong who carded a two-under-par 70 on the final day for a three-over-par 219 total captured the individual gold medal.
In the Men’s category, Selangor, represented by Austin Gan Zi Ming, Muhammad Ajmal Amin, Poon Jia Hao and Rhaasrikanesh Kanavathi claimed the men’s team gold medal after a sudden death play-off against Johor men’s team comprised of Lee Chong Li, Muhammad Muadz Mohd Nadzir, Nor Haqiem Nor Hadi and Syed Nor Ismail Sha Syed Hussein. Both team finished with 3-day combined score of 679.
The SUKMA Golf Championship is a 54-hole team and individual stroke play events featuring 13 men’s teams and 12 women’s teams comprised of four and three team members respectively who are below 21 years old, from 14 states.
Jeneath Wong, who won team silver in the recent SEA Games at Hanoi, Vietnam claimed the individual gold and in the process steered the WP Ladies’ team to win the team gold.
“It feels great to win the individual gold in my first SUKMA appearance,” Jeneath Wong said. “My teammates played quite well for us to secure the team gold.”
Selangor’s Foong Zi Yu wrested the second place from Ng Jing Xuen and Sarawak’s Zulaikah Nasser after carding even-par 72 for 9-over-par 225.
Jocelyn Chee Yi Min of Kedah finished third after scoring 3-under-par 69 today for 10-over-par 226.
In the Men’s Individual Category, Malcolm Ting of Sarawak claimed the gold Medal after a two-hole playoff against Wilayah Persekutuan Muhammad Ikmal Basry who had to be contented with a silver medal. The bronze medal went to Terengganu’s Zia Iqmal Abdul Rashid who carded a six-over-par 222 total.
