Recently crowned PGM Match Play Closed Championship winner S. Sivachandhran revealed that he almost quit the game last year after going through a long title drought.
“I almost quit golf last year but a group friends and family persuaded me to carry on. It’s to them that I owe this victory and I would like thank them for their unwavering support,” said the battle-hardened 38-year-old, who defeated Kenneth De Siva 3&2 in the match play final at Kinrara Golf Club last weekend.
The slightly-built Sivachandhran put on an exhibition of top-class golf at Kinrara to end his barren spell, which dated back to March 2014 when he shared the Kinrara Closed title with R. Nachimuthu at the same venue. The win earned Sivachandhran a cheque for RM34,000, along with a RM1,000 bonus for scoring a hole-in-one at the third hole during his semifinal victory over Daeng Abdul Rahman.
En route to the title, Sivachandhran beat a host of established players such as Nachimuthu, Airil Rizman and M. Sasidaran.
“To beat all those top players in one week is special. I feel good about my game right now,” said Sivachandhran, who is currently competing in the Asian Tour’s Sarawak Championship in Kuching.
