Gavin Green gave his self-confidence a much-needed boost with a season-best T32 performance in last week’s Omega European Masters.
The Malaysian No 1 climbed 23 rungs up the Race To Dubai rankings into 223rd position as he chases a top 126 finish to guarantee his European Tour card for 2022. Gavin has struggled with his form this season due largely to swing changes he made with US-based coach Chris O’Connell, necessitated by a niggling wrist injury that he aggravated last year.
However, there were many positives to take from Gavin’s performance in the Omega event at the par-70 Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club in Crans Montana. The 27-year-old did well to recover from an opening 74, firing a superb second round 65 to make the cut right on the mark of one-under-par. He followed up with weekend rounds of 69 and 68 for a four-under-par total, nine shots behind winner Rasmus Hojgaard of Denmark.
“It definitely is a confidence-booster. I’ve been working hard and constantly chatting with my coach everyday. We’ve had lots of video exchanges and it’s all a process … just took one or two small things to help me get the feeling I needed to play the golf I want to. So it’s definitely getting there, lots of positives,” said Gavin.
The 2021 European Tour schedule has nine tournaments remaining, including the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai which is reserved for the top 60 available players on the Race To Dubai rankings.
“I’m not very sure right now what my schedule is for the rest of the season. I would really love to come back to Malaysia as I haven’t been home in over four months,” noted Gavin, who made his second Olympic appearance in Tokyo last month where he finished 57th.
“But then again this is work, so I’m really not sure at the moment. I could come back after Wentworth (BMW PGA Championship on September 9-12) or it could only be in November,” added the 2017 Asian Tour No 1.
In last year’s abbreviated season, Gavin finished a career-high 52nd on the Race To Dubai rankings and also made it to the DP World Tour Championship for the first time. This year marks his fourth full season on the European Tour.
