TaylorMade’s newest putter series, Truss, provides the answer for golfers seeking the performance of a high-MOI mallet in a more traditional shape.
Distinctive Look
The distinctive look of Truss putters directly relates to their performance. At address, the topline looks traditional but the face-on view reveals a compelling hosel structure that’s the defining feature of the entire family.
Multiple contact points on the topline reduce the amount of unsupported mass, improving the stability of the face at impact. While traditionally-shaped putters with a single contact point on the heel are susceptible to twisting at impact, Truss putters provide exceptional torsional stability.
High MOI
Data on 40,000 putts hit by golfers of various skill levels showed that more than half the strikes occurred on the toe side of centre, which can lead to offline putts. TaylorMade’s engineers set out to create a twist-resistant putter with greater torsional stability while maintaining a traditional shape.
The Truss hosel design derives its stability and strength from a geometric shaping that’s widely used in architecture to create foundational stability. These design elements add stronger horizontal support across the topline.
Having dual contact points on the topline provides greater integrity on strikes across the face, delivering the performance of a high-MOI putter in a traditional shape.
Paradigm Shift
When TaylorMade introduced the Spider franchise more than a decade ago, a paradigm shift occurred, moving away from traditional blades. Today, approximately 60% of players on the PGA Tour use mallets.
As TaylorMade continued to refine the Spider family, many golfers expressed interest in the performance benefits of a high-MOI mallet but with traditional shaping. Dustin Johnson, for example, has enjoyed great success with both Spider and blade-type putters.
Three Shape Options
The three distinct models are finished in nickel cobalt and feature the tour-proven Cobalt Blue Pure Roll insert, fitted with the KBS Stepless Stability Shaft and Lamkin Sink Fit Skinny grip.
TB1 – Heel-shafted blade that most closely resembles a traditional blade, with 8g of weight added to the toe to counterbalance the Truss hosel.
TM1 – Heel-shafted mallet, combining the Truss hosel with a classic mallet shape.
TM2 – The most stable putter in the family, this centre-shafted mallet has minimal offset with the Truss hosel stretching across the entire topline.
