The Malaysia Senior Professional Golf Association holds its inaugural AGM

The Malaysia Senior Professional Golf Association (MSPGA) recently held its inaugural Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 16 February to officially set up the association and appoint its board members. The meeting also saw the election of five committee members.

Sammy Savary, the president and Aziz Ismail, the vice president of the MSPGA at its inaugural Annual General Meeting

During the meeting, the president of the association, Pakiesamy S Savary, disclosed the association’s mission for 2022/2023. They include the setting up of a Malaysia Senior Golf Academy that would provide theory and practical advice and a 14-leg golf tour for seniors with a proposed total prize purse of RM700,000 (RM50,000 per leg).

Savary also mentioned the possibility of an RM500,000 Malaysia Senior PGA Championship. The eventual champion would supposedly have an opportunity to participate in the Insperity Invitational, a PGA Tour Champions event with previous winners including golf heavyweights like Bernhard Langer, Ian Woosnam, Fred Couples, John Daly, among others.

There is also a proposed monthly pro-am with projected prizemoney of RM30,000, a proposed RM100,000 Malaysia Senior Professional Charity Golf event and a MSPGA Matchplay offering a planned prize fund of RM150,000.

According to Savary, the association hopes to organise a 14-state Malaysia Senior TDC Tour that would also be open to foreign professionals. The two-and-a-half-day event would include 2 days of tournament play and a half demo day by the senior professionals. The suggested total prize money for the 14 states TDC Tour is RM3.6 mil (RM300,000 per tournament). The demo day is to allow amateur golfers to learn some game skills from these veteran golfers.

There are also plans to hold a MSPGA Royal Patronage Cup with proposed prizemoney of RM1mil. The MSPGA council members are looking to appoint a royal patron for the association eventually.

Savary would like to culminate the 2022-2023 season with a MSPGA Annual Dinner and Awards Ceremony where an Order of Merit champion would be crowned.

Financial matters were also discussed, and a membership fee of RM200 was announced for ordinary members. Low-handicap senior amateurs can also join the association as associate members at RM2,000. Associate members will enjoy the same facilities as ordinary members but without voting rights.

Savary hopes that the association will bring senior pros together under one umbrella to look out for one another, have better welfare and social security, and hopefully, possible employment opportunities.

The MSPGA is located at No. A-0914, Level 9, Menara A Persiaran MPAJ, Jalan Pandan Utama, Pandan Indah, 55100 Kuala Lumpur. For more information, please contact the Office Administrator, Shanthini Malar at shanthini.shan91@gmail.com
