Rory McIlroy’s Harry Vardon Trophy triumph means the Northern Irishman can claim to be European Number One, World Number One and FedExCup Champion at the same time for the first time in his career.

The Northern Irishman went into this week’s season-ending DP World Tour Championship in pole position to claim his fourth Harry Vardon Trophy and achieved the feat with a fourth-place finish in Dubai.

That saw the 33-year-old cap a remarkable year, in which he also came out on top in America and returned to the top of the Official World Golf Ranking.

But despite recording top-ten finishes in each of the four Major Championships this year, his wait to add to his haul continued in 2022.

The last of McIlroy’s four Major titles came in 2014 and he wants to put himself in the best position to win another next year, as well as making improvements to his game.

McIlroy was proud of his hat-trick of number one spots, as he celebrated winning the DP World Tour Rankings in Partnership with Rolex for the first time since 2015.

He added: “It’s an amazing achievement, an achievement I haven’t been able to accomplish before – I’ve been able to win this Tour’s Rankings and finish the year as World Number One. But to do it in America as well, yeah, it’s very cool.

“I keep saying that I’ve been a pro now for over 15 years, and to still try to figure out ways to try to accomplish new things, that’s what keeps me coming back.

“I feel like I’m healthy. I’m 33 and I feel like my body is in as best shape as it’s ever been and hopefully it’s just moving ahead and keep on moving on.”
