Tiger Woods has give himself a good chance of matching Sam Snead’s PGA Tour record of 82 titles after opening with a 64 to co-lead the Zozo Championship in Chiba, Japan.
Woods, 43, described his round at Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club as one of the strangest he had experienced in a while. After opening with three straight bogeys, he made nine birdies over the final 15 holes … with most coming from left to right putts.
“It seems like every putt I made other than the one at seven was a left to righter. It was crazy! I must have made seven or eight left to righters today, just kept on having left to right putt after left to right putt!
“And lo and behold I make a bomb at seven, which was right to left … which was nice, but it was just weird! It was just one of those crazy days,” said Woods, who has has converted the first-round lead / co-lead into victory 15 out of 30 times in his career.
Woods won his 81st PGA Tour title and 15th Major at this year’s Masters but has not really been in contention since. The Zozo Championship was his first PGA Tour start since undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in August.
