Defending champion Dustin Johnson may be the hot favourite for this year’s Masters at Augusta National but the World No 1 insists that he does not plan his schedule to peak in the Majors.
“I like to play well every week,. I approach every tournament the same. I don’t try to get my game just ready for the Majors. I want to be ready each and every week I play,” said the American star after his two-stroke victory in the European Tour’s Saudi International yesterday.
The Masters returns to its traditional April slot this year, when Johnson will return to Augusta National to defend the title he won so impressively in last November’s rescheduled event.
Johnson’s second Saudi International title was even more impressive than his success in the inaugural edition two years ago, when he also won by two shots, as he struggled with his putting this time around at Royal Greens Golf & Country Club. His supreme ball-striking, however, proved enough to seal the deal.
“I just wasn’t holing anything. I was misreading them. The greens are tricky and with the wind too, so it was definitely hard to get a really good line,” shared Johnson, who ranked 92nd in the putting statistics but topped the field for overall strokes gained.
“So I’ll go home and work on that a little bit … but I’ll be worrying on all parts of my game, just always try to get better,” added the 36-year-old.
Johnson currently has 28 professional titles to his name including two Majors, having also won the 2016 US Open.
Dustin Johnson’s Saudi International win was the first on tour for the recently-launched adidas ZG21 shoe.
