The R&A has ruled out staging any of its championships, including The Open, at Trump Turnberry in Scotland in the foreseeable future.
In a statement released yesterday, R&A chief executive Martin Slumbers noted: “We had no plans to stage any of our championships at Turnberry and will not do so in the foreseeable future.
“We will not return until we are convinced that the focus will be on the championship, the players and the course itself and we do not believe that is achievable in the current circumstances.”
Located in Ayrshire on the southwest coast of Scotland, Trump Turnberry boasts two golf courses – the Ailsa Course which hosted The Open in 1977, 1986, 1994 and 2009, and the King Robert The Bruce Course which is a redesign of the Kintyre Course and reopened in 2017.
The statement came in the wake of last week’s riots in Washington D.C. by supporters of US President Donald Trump, which left five dead and many injured.
On Sunday, the PGA of America had announced that it would not stage the 2022 PGA Championship at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster in New Jersey as originally planned, citing that holding it there “would be detrimental to the PGA of America brand”.
