Armed with new ‘weapons’ from TaylorMade, Gavin Green is all set to do battle in this week’s Omega Dubai Desert Classic.
The Malaysian No 1 has been testing the new TaylorMade SIM2 driver, fairway wood and hybrid and will likely have at least the latter two in his bag at Emirates Golf Club.
“Definitely looking forward to this week. I made a few tweaks with my clubs … new driver, wood and hybrid … and they’re going the distance that’s needed,” said Gavin.
Gavin’s SIM2 arsenal is made up of a 7° driver with a Mitsubishi Tensei Orange 70TX shaft, 3-wood (14.5°) with a new 88g Tensei Orange shaft and 2-rescue (18.5°) with an Aldila Rogue 105TX shaft.
Having agonisingly missed the halfway cut by one shot in last week’s European Tour season-opener, the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, Gavin is keen to make amends in Dubai. He noted that the driver needs to be working well to score at Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis Course, where a number of new teeboxes have bulked up the length to 7,424 yards.
“There will be a lot more driver holes for me this week and keeping tee shots in play will be a big thing. The greens have also gotten smaller. I’ll just have to stay patient and trust some lines off the tee,” said the 27-year-old, who finished a career high 52nd on the European Tour’s Race To Dubai rankings last year.
Gavin tees off in Thursday’s first round at 1.10pm (5.10pm Malaysian time), off the 10th tee with Scotland’s Connor Syme and England’s Curtis Knipes.
