Malaysian No 1 Gavin Green is hopeful of a good performance in this week’s Betfred British Masters hosted by Danny Willett. The GBP1,850,000 event starts today at The Belfry in Sutton Coldfield, England.

While he missed the cut by just one shot in last week’s Canary Islands Championship after rounds of 70 and 69, Gavin noted on social media that his game is heading in the right direction after working with coach Chris O’Connell who flew over to meet him.

After seven events on the 2021 European Tour schedule, Gavin is in 205th place on the Race To Dubai rankings. In 2020, he finished a career-high 52nd on the season-long rankings despite a wrist injury which forced him to make a swing change.

Gavin is also looking to consolidate his place in the men’s event of this year’s Tokyo Olympics. He is currently in 54th place on the men’s Olympic golf rankings, where the top 60 on June 21 qualify to tee off at Kasumigaseki Country Club on July 29 to August 1. Gavin made his Olympic debut at Rio 2016 where he finished 45th.

In two previous appearances at the British Masters, Gavin finished T15 at Hillside Golf Club in 2019 and T7 at Walton Heath in 2018. He missed last year’s event due to travel restrictions in the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Gavin tees off in today’s first round of the Betfred British Masters at 12.30pm (7.30pm Malaysian time) off the 10th tee with Denmark’s Benjamin Poke and Finland’s Janne Kaske. The tournament will be telecast live on the Golf Channel HD (Astro Channel 822) from 8.30pm for the first three days and from 7.30pm for Saturday’s final round.
