Selangor Eco-Adventures: Thrilling Family Fun

So … the CMCO has been extended to year-end. Woohoo! Not.
But with the number of new daily Covid-19 cases in the country on a rise, it’s clearly the inevitable call as the powers that be attempt to rein in the alarming digits.

Holidays abroad, social get-togethers, parties and nights out on the town may be a thing of the past (for now), but we can still lose ourselves in lovely daydreams of good times, great experiences – especially with plenty of local destinations awaiting to satisfy the wanderlust in you once the CMCO is lifted.

And if you’re a Selangor resident, and looking to indulge in fun, thrilling outdoor activities with the whole family, the state has a number of exciting eco-adventure offerings. So turn that frown upside down, and check out these fantastic spots!

FOREST RESEARCH INSTITUTE MALAYSIA (FRIM)
One of the leading institutions in tropical forestry research in the world, the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) in Kepong occupies an area of ​​600 hectares, surrounded by the Lagong Hill Forest Reserve. Along with its latest attraction, the Sky Walk, FRIM offers rich back-to-nature experiences – enjoy a picnic with your family, jogging on the Rover Track, walking under the canopy, camping, hiking and cycling – or simply learn more about the flora and fauna. The entrance fee is RM5; an additional RM5 will be charged if you bring a camera to take pictures.

KANCHING ECO FOREST PARK
Kanching Eco Forest Park is a must-visit eco-tourism destination in Rawang. It is home to a grand 208-metre waterfall that cascades over seven tiers, as well as a challenging hiking trail with various levels of difficulties.
Not only that, you can even enjoy a leisurely picnic with your family as you soak in the surrounding nature – and spot cheeky monkeys. The entrance fee is RM1 on weekdays and RM2 on weekends for MyCard holders, and RM5 for non-Malaysians.

SKYTREX SUNGAI CHONGKAK
Located in the cool, hilly area of Hulu Langat, Skyrex Sungai Chongkak is known as ‘Malaysia’s First Flying Fox Park’, offering a tree-to-tree ‘sky-trekking’ experience where you can fly, swing, glide and dangle on the various aerial obstacles suspended above lush tropical Malaysian rainforest. There are three packages available – each with 25 different obstacles, which takes about an hour to complete. Entrance fees range between RM50 and RM130 (depending on the package).

BROGA HILL
Approximately 400m in altitude, Broga Hill in Hulu Langat is easily climbed by most people – it takes about an hour to reach the top, thus is a popular destination with casual hikers. The grass-covered hilltop, along with a combination of lalang and the surrounding scenery, makes it a lovely picnic and photography spot. Once hikers get to the hilltop, there’s a stall selling fresh coconut water, ready to quench the thirst of weary hikers. A fee of RM1 will be charged for hiking. Interesting fact: Climbing Broga Hill 10 times is equivalent to climbing Mount Kinabalu.

WHITEWATER RAFTING KKB
Located in Kuala Kubu Bharu (KKB), the whitewater rafting centre offers thrill-seekers a splashing good time, along with an array of outdoor adventures in the area. Enjoy an 8km-long adrenaline-pumping guided whitewater rafting trip, which takes off on the Hulu Selangor River not far from the Selangor Dam – truly an experience to savour, especially if you love water sports. Plus, there are various other activities suitable for people of all ages.

TAMAN ALAM KUALA SELANGOR
Taman Alam Kuala Selangor is a 2.4km2 park surrounded by mangrove swamps; it encompasses two trails – Main Trail and Bund Trail – as well as the Mangrove Walkway extending into the mangrove forest. Bird lovers should definitely visit the two watch towers to spot more than a hundred various species of birds from around the world, including migratory birds from Siberia and Russia. The park is also home to primates, namely silver leaf monkeys and long-tailed macaques. The entrance fee is RM4 for adults and RM1 for children below 16 years of age.

PARAGLIDING (JUGRA HILL & BATU PAHAT HILL)
Immerse yourself in the beauty of nature – from the skies – by paragliding at Jugra Hill (Kuala Langat) and Batu Pahat Hill (Hulu Selangor) at approximately 400 feet in the air. These two places are must-visits for thrill-seekers looking for outdoor adventures and those who would love to experience the feeling of ‘free-flying’. Paragliding here is most suitable between the months of March and September. The rate per person is estimated at RM320.

4X4 ADVENTURE (TERATAK RIVERVIEW)
Feeling adventurous? Then put on your ‘daredevil’ hat and get ready to explore the jungle via a fun and challenging 4×4 ride! At Teratak Riverview (Hulu Selangor), the 4×4 (4WD) provided will travel through the green forest roads directly to the traditional village areas, fruit plantations, across the river, swamps – even waterfalls. In addition, you could also enjoy a picnic and take a dip in the river while enjoying the beauty of nature. The rates depend on the itinerary and requirements of each participant.
